Zambia Celebrates 60 Years of Independence in Türkiye, Honoring Heritage and Strengthening International Ties.Zambia’s Ambassador to Türkiye His Excellency Lt. Gen. Dr. William Maipambe Sikazwe (Rtd.), described Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary as a celebration of the nation’s resilience, unity, and rich heritage.Speaking at this year’s independence celebrations in Ankara, held under the theme “Zambia, 60 Years Strong: Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future,” Dr. Sikazwe emphasized that the anniversary not only commemorates Zambia’s achievements but also acknowledges the invaluable support from Türkiye and the international community, which has significantly contributed to Zambia’s progress and development.Dr. Sikazwe reflected on Zambia’s journey since independence, paying homage to the nation’s heroes particularly the founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, who passed away on 17th June, 2021 and would have turned 100 this year.“Fondly known as ‘KK’, Dr. Kaunda remains a symbol of liberation struggle, championing not only Zambia’s independence but also the freedom of other African nations,” he said. Dr. Sikazwe highlighted Dr. Kaunda’s enduring legacy of unity, peace, and development, which continues to inspire today’s leaders in Zambia and beyond.He also addressed global challenges, such as climate change and armed conflict, emphasizing the critical need for unity among nations. Citing President Hakainde Hichilema’s words, “Instability anywhere is instability everywhere,” he urged for international cooperation to address issues that transcend borders.Dr. Sikazwe specifically highlighted Zambia’s need for investments in renewable energy, especially solar power, as climate change increasingly affect hydroelectric power generation. He invited Turkish investors to explore opportunities in Zambia’s growing energy sector, as well as in mining, tourism, health, and infrastructure. “Our country offers a favorable business environment, and we encourage Turkish investors to consider these sectors,” he stated.He expressed gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his efforts in strengthening Zambia-Türkiye relations, emphasizing their shared commitment to good governance and anti-corruption. "Our relationship continues to thrive, bringing mutual benefits to both our countries and peoples," he remarked.Dr. Sikazwe also highlighted joint efforts in areas such as economic development, trade and investment, and education, which have not only deepened bilateral ties but also fostered growth and resilience in both nations.Speaking at the same occasion, Türkiye’s Minister of Labor and Social Security, Prof. Dr. Vedat Işikhan, expressed his condolences to the families affected by the October 23, 2024 terrorist attack at the TUSAŞ facilities in Kahramankazan.He affirmed Türkiye's resilience, stating that such attacks would not undermine the nation’s unity or its commitment to a secure and prosperous future. Prof. Dr. Işikhan expressed gratitude to all nations that offered condolences, including Zambia, and emphasized Türkiye's commitment to strengthening partnerships with African countries.The Minister highlighted Türkiye’s commitment to deepening partnerships with African nations, emphasizing that collaboration with Africa has become an integral part of Türkiye’s multidimensional foreign policy. He added that Türkiye's 44 embassies across Africa, along with its hosting of 38 African embassies in Ankara, including Zambia’s, highlights the importance of these relationships.The bond between Zambia and Türkiye was notably strengthened in 2018 when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Zambia, establishing key partnerships in sectors such as security, agriculture, and education. Recently, the relationship grew further with the visit of Zambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, during which a Memorandum of Understanding in the education sector was signed.Prof. Dr. Işikhan also commended the efforts of Turkish humanitarian organizations, including TİKA, AFAD, and the Turkish Red Crescent, which have supported Zambia with capacity-building initiatives and humanitarian aid, especially amid recent drought challenges. He extended his congratulations to Zambia on its 60th Independence Day, reaffirming Türkiye’s continued support for Zambia’s prosperity and growth.
